When you open a book and turn its pages, its space unfolds for you, but this experience is often confined to being solitary. When I was writing white, I would always have the Calligraphic Manuscript with me. During countless meetings in bars and cafes, I would take the work that was being written out and share selected pages, reading them aloud. In these intimate exchanges, I felt how the book could create a shared presence. During a residency in Tel Aviv, I presented The White Book publicly for the first time. I developed these powerful encounters into a performance format that merged the book with physical architecture. This allowed me to bring people into the space of The White Book together.
