The White Book - First Edition Rituals of passing on a space

Helene Lundbye Petersen, The White Book - First Edition Rituals of passing on a space, 2012- 15, Digital Photographs, documenting 48 moments.

When I received The White Book from print, I immediately wanted to elaborate on it. This inspired my first Book Intervention, a series of black-ribboned books with black seals. I saw the ribbons like a pen on paper, though here they sealed the books that I would bring to special meetings. Each time a handed over a book, I performed a small ritual. I would place it on a surface with a personal note and take a photograph. From then on, it wasn’t mine any more. It was a way for me to pass on this White space that I had experienced to others. The space would become theirs when they broke the seal and opened the book. To begin with I thought I would do 100 copies, but when I reached 50, I decided to stop these rituals, as other editions had taken over, and the work had evolved out of the frail first phase. Even though the first edition series exists in 50 editions, there are only 48 photographs, as number 8 is my performance copy, and one (ed.28/50)as a reading copy·
